FOOD FACIALS!

Want a healthy and vibrant complexion but have sensitive skin? The solution may be in your kitchen! Homemade facials made from healthy natural foods can help reduce inflammation, calm redness, improve sun damage, add extra moisture, and soothe irritated sensitive skin.

If you have sensitive skin, it can be challenging to find skin care products that don’t cause your skin to react with cherry-colored vengeance. We all love a good facial (who doesn’t?), but unfortunately many store-bought face masks contain irritants for sensitive skin. Even some of the most natural and organic skin-care products can cause adverse reactions.

To combat sensitive-skin reactions and still achieve a healthy and glowing complexion, natural whole-food remedies have come to the rescue! Luckily, your fridge and kitchen cupboards may already contain vibrantly healthy ingredients, such as avocado, raw cacao powder, cucumber, lemon, banana, and coconut milk that make wonderful plant-based vegan facials for sensitive skin.

Why vegan face masks? Whether you are vegan or not, many homemade facials or skin care recipes use dairy-based milks and yogurts along with egg whites which can cause some reactions for certain sensitive skin types. For those following a vegan lifestyle and looking for vegan DIY skincare ideas, these 6 masks are completely vegan and plant-based!

Homemade food facials using healthy ingredients from your kitchen are so clean and fresh, you may want to eat them right off your face. And guess what? You can!

6 HOMEMADE VEGAN FACE MASKS FOR SENSITIVE SKIN USING FOOD FROM YOUR FRIDGE

#1 COCONUT MILK, LEMON, AND TURMERIC FACE MASK

Turmeric Lemon and Coconut DIY Face Mask

This face mask helps reduce redness creating glowing moisturized skin with no irritants. Coconut milk contains calming properties and makes a good base for mixing ingredients and facial application.

Turmeric is perfect for reducing inflammation and redness. Lemon juice is a beautiful skin brightener and reduces sun damage.

INGREDIENTS

  •  2 tbsp coconut milk (or coconut cream for a thicker mask)

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder

DIRECTIONS

Start with clean skin. Mix lemon juice and coconut milk in a bowl. Add the turmeric and mix well. The mixture should be lightly pasty. If it’s too watery, add a dash more turmeric.

Apply the mixture to your face and let dry. Rinse with cold water. Some people may experience a slight yellow tint of the skin after using turmeric. Don’t worry! Your face will not stay orange.

#2 CUCUMBER AND LEMON FACE MASK

Cucumbers are amazing for the skin. They reduce puffiness and tighten pores, while adding moisture to the skin and reducing inflammation. For extra inflammation-reducing properties, cool cucumber in fridge beforehand. Citrus, especially lemon juice, brightens skin and helps reduce skin discolorations, such as age spots, etc.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cucumber

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

Start with clean skin. Blend cucumber and lemon juice until the mixture is slightly chunky. Cucumber may also be mashed with a fork if preferred. Apply the cucumber facial directly to face and let the mask set for 10-15 minutes.

This mask may be thinner than the others, so watch for drips! Remove with cold-warm water. Pat dry.

#3 BEET AND COCONUT MILK FACE MASK

Beet and Coconut Milk Radiant Skin Mask.jpg

You may be surprised to see vibrantly crimson beets on a list for sensitive skin-care solutions. However, you don’t need to worry! Beets won’t stain your face; in fact, beets add a natural glow and extra soothing moisture. Beets are rich in antioxidants, minerals, and anti-inflammatory properties, offering wonderful benefits for the skin.

Don’t want to put beets on your skin? Drink some beet juice! Beet juice does wonders for the skin as beets are powerful detoxifiers, helping flush the liver and keeping your cells healthy.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tbsp finely grated beet or 1-2 tsp beet powder

  • 2 tbsp coconut milk (or coconut cream for a thicker mask)

DIRECTIONS

Start with clean skin. Combine both ingredients in a bowl. Use finely grated raw beets for a thicker consistency or add beet powder to coconut milk for a finer less chunky face mask. Apply mixture to face and allow to dry (about 15-20 minutes). Rinse with cold or warm water.

Start with clean skin. Combine canned pumpkin puree (Use fresh pumpkin if you prefer, but it’s more time consuming.) with apple cider and cinnamon in a small bowl and mix. Add a tsp of nutmeg (optional).

Apply mixture to face using your hands or a make-up brush. Avoid getting too close to your eyes. Let mask set for 15-20 minutes. Gently wash off the mask with cold-warm water or a damp washcloth.
